I’ve just seen a movie by Spike Lee: “Girl 6”. A nice film, not so gripping as others by Lee – for instance we could say this of “Clockers” or “Malcolm x” or, at least, of “Do the right thing” – but with enough overtones and meanings. Girl 6 – Jade is her true name – is the main character of the movie. She’s an actress, but she isn’t able to survive in such an environment. This makes a failure in her life. She leaves her acting teacher – an awful one. She’s shouting all the time. We could rather say she’s howling all the time -. So she decides to look for a job which will enable her in order to save enough money to go to California, Tinseltown, afterwards. She has just made a screen-test for Mr. Quentin Tarantino (who plays the role of a director in the movie), who asked her to show her tits. It seemed as if she wanted to show them, but suddendly she stopped undressing and refused to go on. In the same period she was doing four jobs to earn money for her rent, her lessons and so on. So she answers an ad seeking for females with sexy voices and erotic attitudes (To apply for a job…the hateful way). They engage her. Also Spike Lee plays a role in his own movie: he’s the neighbour of Girl 6. They share a phone-set in the corridor between their flats. He’s her best friend as well. He’s unemployed: his main job is to collect football picture-cards with the hope of making money out of them one day when they will increase their value. They use to speak to each other during dinner-time, and she usually lends him money for his rent. Another character is her former husband. He’s still in love with her, that’s why he shadows her all the time. His job consist in committing criminal acts, petty one’s, “without weapons”, as he uses to say. He will be tryng to catch her love but she doesn’t trust him anymore.
Suddendly she sees a TV report speaking about a very young girl fallen into a well. This story affects her very deeply: it will be a frequent flashback during the movie. So when she earns enough money she makes up her mind to leave New York and reach L.A. where she’ll try to improve her acting. Once again she’s offered the opportunity to be screen-tested. Before leaving New York she met that young injured girl: she gave her a little bag full of money. There she is – after leaving her friend and her former husband – . What about her future? They ask her to show her tits again. She suddendly stoppes and goes away. We assume she’ll manage by herself in another way.
