In the Western world, usually, Arts were for fools or affluent people who had so much time to spend in so- called recreative activities. Arts were seen in opposition to the “real world”, the world of money, hard working, business. We suspect this type of answer was given by the cultural background given by the protestant thought where contemplating the world’s beauty or relaxing was considered pitiful.
Anyway this has been the average consideration for the Arts, up to the time it became a way to make money, it became a business. It is not a mistery that your way of life, the capitalistic one, has the need to spreadwide its relationships to survive. The Arts field was one fo those new brouches of human activity to colonize, grow and develop to gain money, power, influence.
If we want to talk about an artcraft or give it a financial value, we must put our cultural detection into a frame, able to recognize, every type of art, everytime.
To do that we have to admit Art is not a secondary way to explain the world and is not a hobby to spend your time or, in the worst case, to waste it as well as your money.
So, the first step is to admit Art is at the same level of Science; it has the same, even if different, power to explain, describe, change the world’s reality. If truth exsists, it is a part of it, a particular way to tell the truth.
What is the philosophical discipline which enables Art to work, giving it the necessary background for that?
It is Aestethics, the philosophical branch that helps humans to tell the difference between an artisanal work and a masterpiece of Art, as well as between something we define beautiful and something we declare bad, aestethics helps us in building the cultural category of value, which is, at the some time, a philosophical and an economical one.
Yet, we must consider why Arts, their products, are so far comparing with the products of consumerism. A piece of art is not consumable as a pair of shoes or a mobile phone: its meaning is going so far beyond any immediate and mere utilitarism. The meaning of a Van Gogh picture will continue over the times even when our way of life and mode of production and our society will be dead, a poem, as well as a picture of…….will be appreciate, enjoyable and readable forever.
According with Pier Paolo Pasolini, the great italian filmaker dead in 1975, “a piece of art become a good, is the result of a production, but cannot be considered as the other type of goods.”
A picture, a poem, a film “are a very strange type of good: the types which never die”.
Infact, you will enjoy them for the next 1000 years or 10000 years.
